How Important Is Graphic Design Anyway?

The importance of good graphic design was exemplified at The Academy Awards when the wrong card was opened for 2017 Best Picture. Read the Fast Co. article here to see what I mean.

When it comes to messaging, specifically for digital content, I ask clients to consider these 2 simple questions:

1. What does the audience need to know?
2. What do you want the audience to do?

In this case, the audience can be defined as the readers, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. What they needed to KNOW was category + winner and what they needed to DO was promptly notice the category on the card was wrong, and to not read the winner out loud until receiving the correct card. So, why was CATEGORY (1 of the 2 most critical pieces of information) so small on the card? If this had been more clear would this mistake have been avoided?
